Level 1 vs. Level 2 Home Charging

Most electric vehicles ship with a standard Level 1 charger that plugs into a common 120-volt outlet. Level 1 charging is incredibly slow, adding only 3 to 5 miles of range per hour. To charge your battery overnight, you need a Level 2 charging station. Level 2 chargers plug into a 240-volt outlet (similar to an electric dryer) and charge your vehicle 5 to 7 times faster, fully replenishing the battery in 4 to 8 hours.

The Installation Requirements

To safely install a Level 2 charging station, a certified electrician will perform the following steps:

• Perform a Load Calculation: We evaluate your home’s existing electrical panel capacity. If you have a 100-amp service, adding a 50-amp EV charger circuit may require a panel box upgrade to 200 amps to prevent frequent main breaker trips.
• Run High-Voltage Wiring: We run heavy-gauge copper conductors from your panel to the garage or driveway charging location, using water-tight conduit where necessary.
• Install a Dedicated Breaker: A dedicated 240V double-pole circuit breaker is installed in your panel to safeguard the line against overloads.
• Mount and Wire the Station: We mount the charging unit (such as the Tesla Wall Connector or ChargePoint Home Flex) and wire it securely, ensuring all local building codes are met.
